Reuse the News!

Went into the office to help Tom and Zoe set up for the big Reuse the News Collegian Earth Day event.

We had a great turn out. Everyone seemed to love the “News Wad Toss Game” where they aimed for a cleaner earth and won lollie pops, cookies, and cupcakes.

The ladies also enjoyed learning how to make the newspaper headbands.

Happy Earth day, tree huggers!

Evalyn Cathrine Caldwell’s Baby Shower and Laughing Horses

Mama and I went to Mountain Park FBC this morning. My favorite is always the worship. Pastor Bill talked about going. Go and serve God now.

Picked Jesse up and ate at Quizno’s.

Ashley and I drove out to the country for Emily’s baby shower.

Mansfield is about an hour away and everyone out here owns horses or as Em’s dad calls them, “Yard ornaments.”

Notice our tongues.

We painted bibs, onesies and burp cloths instead of playing lame games.

Guess which one’s mine. (The one involving a pillow.)

It was great to see an old friend. Emily is moving back to the Hawaiin army base as soon as her baby girl is born.

I drove down to school to help take pictures for the International Festival.

Click here to see all the pictures I took. (This will take you to our Collegian blog that I update as well.)

The Collegian team also grilled hot dogs and gave them to students who took our survey.

We passed our 96 dogs!

Zoe and I picked our canidates for the new Collegian staff positions.

Climbed St. Mountain.

Daddy leaves for Costa Rica at 4:30! Please be praying for him.

Interview with Mrs. Bonet

I got to school early this morning so I could have a chance to interview Mrs. Bonet.

This is how it went.

Is the Civic Engagment Center Engaging Us?

Op Ed

The Atlanta Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning center was empty when I walked in; even though it’s open  Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30.

“Knock, knock!” I yelled.

“Back here!” called a female voice from the back.

I walked through the newly furnished room with 4 computer stations and the best service learning books money can buy, lining the shelves and into Mrs. Bonet’s office.

“I’m here to find out if I can get an internship in the field I’m interested in: Journalism.” I explain to her.

Mrs. Bonet, the service learning Coordinator, is very polite and asks for my contact information. She responds, ” we are still in the development stages of the program. I’ll reply back to you when we have options.”

“Quite a few students are interested… faculty and staff from other campuses have stopped by to say hi.” Mrs. Bonet goes on to tell me.

Mrs. Bonet is the professional administrative to the staff and wasn’t able to answer  my questions thoroughly. She advised that I get in contact with Deborah Gonzales, the associate vice president.

I left feeling disappointed. I got little information about any opportunities involved in Journalism and even though the Center, which hovers over the  cafeteria filled with students, is still empty.

You can tell that this Center, which was opened 2 months ago, is still in the beginning stages.

I hope to report back soon with more information on how GPC students can get hands on experience in their field of study at this new center.

For more information about the Civic Engagement Center click here.

Went to CPR class. We learned how to splint peoples’ extremities.

Home to work on news biz and Bible Lessons.

Ashley Feeds 25

Geo quiz this morning. I made a 91. I missed one question. Boo.

We’re studied more about, “poor little deformed rocks,” as my professor puts it.

We’re learning the origin of Hinduism in Religons. We also got our exams back. I made an 88. I swear I can’t make an A in that class.

I picked up 3 family sized bags of chicken nuggets for the kids today.

It took about 20 minutes to heat up all 105 of them.

Josh, Mo and Jesse played with the kids while I got the food ready.

We gathered the kids togehter on the dusty pollinated lawn and I told them the story about Jesus feeding the 5000 people. Then we prayed together before  I passed the nuggets.

Afterward, we played red rover.

Face Paint and Water Balloons

In CPR class we’re learning how to care for burns. Today we practiced wrapping eachother up in gauze.

Headed over to Kensington. I’d gotten some long sheets of scrap paper from the newspaper office so we enjoyed painting on that which lead to painting on our faces.

With our war paint on it was time to battle! We all grabbed the water balloons and started hurtling them at eachother.

On the way home I got a call from Mr. David, the newspaper advisor, “Hey Ashley, I don’t want to keep you in suspense for long. You got the editor-in-chief job!”

Woohoo! Please be praying for me as I take on this new endevour.

Sidewalk Chalk

Rocks and religion today.

Walter Crawford came by the Collegian office. I took some photos of him for his articles.

Miles and I ate El Torero. Guess who we ran into? Ian, Ruthie and Lisa North!

Mo biked to Kensington so I picked her up and we headed to visit with the kids. They’re on spring break so we prayed over radishes and drew with sidewalk chalk.

Some of the older girls are having problems getting along. Please be praying for them. I hate having to break up fights.

Spring is here!

International Pillow Fight Day

I studied Spanish out in the sun today before heading to the staff meeting.

I always like to meet the other writers.

Hilary asks me, “What are you doing in an hour? Want to go pillow fight?”

“Of course I do!”

We stopped by target to buy some feather pillows.

Hilary took the shots.

At least 100 people were at the park venting their feathered down anger.

Interview with the Dean!

Dad and I did some visualization of success before I went in for my interview today. I’m applying for the editor-in-chief and opinion’s editor position. I feel really confident about it.

In ther interview I was giving 5 minutes to present my ideas and then they read scenarios from a script.

“If you were editor-in-chief and you were called by the president of the school saying one of your reporters printed a slanted article about him. What would you do?”

We’ll see if I got it within the week.

Jesse and I climbed the mountain and ate at Uncle Dave’s with Ashley and Lee.

After wards we went to Ashley’s bonfire and made smores.

The Great Candy Toss!

Miles and I climbed the mountain this morning before I had to go to school.

In CPR we’re learning about Soft Tissue Injuries. We talked about burns. I could really relate to that with my Dad getting burned.

Met up with Jesse and Dad. We went into Chamblee to help the kids with their homework.

I had a lot of fun working with the girls. Barbara was SO smart! She’s in 1st grade and was reading so well.

She asked me, “What’s another name for brain?”

I started thinking. She put her head in her hands and said,” Oh yeah! Cerebrum! I was thinking with my cerebrum.”

All I was thinking was yeah, faster than me.

Dad did a huge candy toss with the kids. I was right there with them.

Ate Wendy’s with the boys. Dad helped me come up with some ideas for my newspaper interview tomorrow. I’m applying for the editor-in-chief postion so I have to get interviewed by the dean.

Working on some homework.
