This was a quick read by John Steinbeck about two very different guys just trying to live of the “fatta da land.”

CPR Class
Miles mowed his lawn it looks so much better. Then we went to Always Fresh for lunch.
Darnishia and I did our skills check splinting in CPR class today. Afterwards, with half the classtime left, Renee, Telly and I did a photo article on the CPR basics. It’s going to be a great piece for our orientation issue in June.
It’s always great when Mrs. Opal comes to Kensington. She worked with Timothy on his spelling words.
Samara and I practiced her letters and words. It was super gusty and our homework papers kept flying away.
Finished the Costa Rica bookmark project. Click here for instructions on how to make your own.

Opposum at Kensington
There was a opposum at Kensington today.
We didn’t have snacks today and the kids would ask, “What do you have for snack?”
“Just Jesus to fill you up.” I told Dajuan, Kayla and Samara.
“What?”
“Yeah, Jesus loves you so much his love will fill you up.”
“Does Jesus love bad people too? Dajuan asked.
“Yes He does.” I went on and told them the story about the garden of Eden and the evil snake.
Climbed the mountian with Justin and Anna.

A Little of This, a Little of That

Mrs. Ziegler comes in the classroom shaking her head.
“Did you finish grading the take home tests?” Lydia asks from the second row.
A pained expression forms on Mrs. Ziegler’s face as she sucks air violently in through her teeth.
“The take home test, don’t ask me about those. The highest grade was an 85.We’ll discuss it later.”
Turns out people did pretty poorly on the 7 question exam.I was anxious to see the grades. At the end of class she passes them back. I flip up the cover page, “An 84! Sweet!”
Flipped through the pages of Vanity Fair and read a great article about Grace Kelly. Beautiful lady.
Finished up Buddism today. We talked about “anatman” or the “no-self.” The way I’ve come to understand it is that there is no distinction between your pain and my pain it’s all our pain.
Ate a speedy with Miles at El T before Mo and I headed for Kensington.
Maintance was draining the pool, which created a huge water slide for the kids to play in. They were having so much fun playing football in the water. Later we collected in the tennis courts for a game of giant soccer.
When we got tired we all sat down in a circle and played the name game. First say your name, spell it with claps and then say the name of an animal that begins with the first letter of your name.
“I’m Ashley, A_S_H_L_E_Y, the Anteater!”
“I’m Hanezor, the horse!”
“I’m Zeirious, the zebra!” his twin brother shouts.
Little Tatiana is up next,” I’m Tatyana, T_A_T_Y_A_N, uhh A, the turtle!
After the name game I asked if anyone had any prayer requests.
“I’m just glad the wearthers nice!” Hanezor yells.
We laugh and pray together thanking him for the sunshine.
Mama’s Big 50 Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Mama! We love you!
The whole family went to Rock Bridge Baptist Church today to hear Dad speak. I talked for about 5 minutes then he came on and cracked everybody up.
Ate lunch at the church while Dad went over the 5 levels of engagement.
Miles and I watched the Food channel until he had to go to work. I came home and wrote up my newsletter.
Went out to eat Italian at Provino’s for Mo’s birthday dinner. Yumbo!

Costa Rica Bookmark
Bookmarks are easy to make and are actually useful gifts.
For this Pico Project you’ll need:
-cloth or paper with interesting design.
– scissors
– cut out pictures
-laminator/ laminator plastic sheets
Let’s get to it!
1. Cut your paper or cloth into smaller pieces. You choose the length. I made mine about inches long and 2 inches wide.
2. Print and cut out your favorite picture of you friend, family, boyfriend, dog, whatever… and place it on the bookmark.
3. Place bookmarks on plastic laminator sheets, laminate and cut out. Rounding off the edges makes for a cleaner look.
Now pass them out to friends, family and coworkers.

Finished up earthquakes damage today. People build up on the side of mudflow mountains and act surprised when the house slides down.
Compared and contrasted Hinduism to the Western religions.
Recycled newspaper by creating headbands. We’ll use them tomorrow for your big “Reuse the News” Earth day event.
Passed out a TON, literally, of papers.

I got a work out.
Tom and I rode over to the Decatur campus to deliver and passout papers.

Reuse the News!
Went into the office to help Tom and Zoe set up for the big Reuse the News Collegian Earth Day event.

We had a great turn out. Everyone seemed to love the “News Wad Toss Game” where they aimed for a cleaner earth and won lollie pops, cookies, and cupcakes.
The ladies also enjoyed learning how to make the newspaper headbands.

Happy Earth day, tree huggers!

Evalyn Cathrine Caldwell’s Baby Shower and Laughing Horses
Mama and I went to Mountain Park FBC this morning. My favorite is always the worship. Pastor Bill talked about going. Go and serve God now.
Picked Jesse up and ate at Quizno’s.
Ashley and I drove out to the country for Emily’s baby shower.
Mansfield is about an hour away and everyone out here owns horses or as Em’s dad calls them, “Yard ornaments.”
Notice our tongues.
We painted bibs, onesies and burp cloths instead of playing lame games.
Guess which one’s mine. (The one involving a pillow.)
It was great to see an old friend. Emily is moving back to the Hawaiin army base as soon as her baby girl is born.

This is how it went.
Is the Civic Engagment Center Engaging Us?
April 8, 2010 at 4:28 PM
Ashley Cummins
Op Ed
The Atlanta Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning center was empty when I walked in; even though it’s open Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30.
“Knock, knock!” I yelled.
“Back here!” called a female voice from the back.
I walked through the newly furnished room with 4 computer stations and the best service learning books money can buy, lining the shelves and into Mrs. Bonet’s office.
“I’m here to find out if I can get an internship in the field I’m interested in: Journalism.” I explain to her.
Mrs. Bonet, the service learning Coordinator, is very polite and asks for my contact information. She responds, ” we are still in the development stages of the program. I’ll reply back to you when we have options.”
“Quite a few students are interested… faculty and staff from other campuses have stopped by to say hi.” Mrs. Bonet goes on to tell me.
Mrs. Bonet is the professional administrative to the staff and wasn’t able to answer my questions thoroughly. She advised that I get in contact with Deborah Gonzales, the associate vice president.
I left feeling disappointed. I got little information about any opportunities involved in Journalism and even though the Center, which hovers over the cafeteria filled with students, is still empty.
You can tell that this Center, which was opened 2 months ago, is still in the beginning stages.
I hope to report back soon with more information on how GPC students can get hands on experience in their field of study at this new center.
For more information about the Civic Engagement Center click here.
Went to CPR class. We learned how to splint peoples’ extremities.
Home to work on news biz and Bible Lessons.

Ashley Feeds 25
Geo quiz this morning. I made a 91. I missed one question. Boo.
We’re studied more about, “poor little deformed rocks,” as my professor puts it.
We’re learning the origin of Hinduism in Religons. We also got our exams back. I made an 88. I swear I can’t make an A in that class.
I picked up 3 family sized bags of chicken nuggets for the kids today.
It took about 20 minutes to heat up all 105 of them.
Josh, Mo and Jesse played with the kids while I got the food ready.
We gathered the kids togehter on the dusty pollinated lawn and I told them the story about Jesus feeding the 5000 people. Then we prayed together before I passed the nuggets.
Afterward, we played red rover.

Jesus Feeds 5000+

A Boy Give His Lunch to Jesus
John 6:1-13
Buy the family size package of chicken nuggets or fish sticks. If you have over 25 kids make sure to purchase 3 bags. You can get this Kroger brand for under $20.
Gather the kids up and tell them the story about Jesus’ food miracle.
Jesus was a preacher. He taught people about the Kingdom of Heaven.
People loved to follow him and listen to what he had to say.
Jesus would teach and the people would gather around him like you are gathered around me.
Well, one day he was talking to about 5000 people and it was getting kind of late so Jesus’ disiples said, ” hey Jesus let’s send these people home so they can eat.”
but Jesus replied, “no, go and see if there is food among the crowd.”
And do you know what happened? A little boy (point to a little boy and say about your age) came forward gave his lunch to Jesus.
He gave him 2 fishes and 5 loaves of bread.
Jesus prayed for the food. Let we will now.
(Pray of the nuggets with the kids.)
“Lord, thank you for this food. Bless it in nourishment of our bodies and help there to be plenty for everyone.”
Then Jesus handed out the food to all 5000 plus men, women and children. Wow! Does Jesus rock or what?
(Pass out all the nuggets. 4 each)
Hiding from God
Hiding from God
Genesis 3:1-19
Google and print out a picture of Adam and Eve that you can hold up in front of the kids.
Play hide and go seek. Then explain that you can’t hide anything from God.
Adam and Eve just ate fruit from the forbidin tree!
The snake tricks Even into eating the fruit that God specifically told them not to eat. God said, “if you eat this you WILL die!”
Have you ever done something that you knew was wrong? Did you try to “hide” from God?
But God sees and hears everything.
Because Adam and Eve disobeyed God he had to kick them out of Eden, the beautiful garden with delicious fruit and wild animals.

Do you know what Eve means in Hebrew? It means ” to give life.” That’s why Eve is the mother who “gave life” to all mankind.
We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.
God still loved Adam and Eve and you and me even when we do bad things. Let’s pray.
Lord,
Thank You for always forgiving me.Thank You for listening to my prayers and caring about me. Thank You that I know I can always to talk to You about my problems and You will listen.
Help me to remember that doing the right thing makes You happy.
Face Paint and Water Balloons
In CPR class we’re learning how to care for burns. Today we practiced wrapping eachother up in gauze.
Headed over to Kensington. I’d gotten some long sheets of scrap paper from the newspaper office so we enjoyed painting on that which lead to painting on our faces.
With our war paint on it was time to battle! We all grabbed the water balloons and started hurtling them at eachother.
On the way home I got a call from Mr. David, the newspaper advisor, “Hey Ashley, I don’t want to keep you in suspense for long. You got the editor-in-chief job!”
Woohoo! Please be praying for me as I take on this new endevour.
Love,
Ashley
Sidewalk Chalk
Rocks and religion today.
Walter Crawford came by the Collegian office. I took some photos of him for his articles.
Miles and I ate El Torero. Guess who we ran into? Ian, Ruthie and Lisa North!
Mo biked to Kensington so I picked her up and we headed to visit with the kids. They’re on spring break so we prayed over radishes and drew with sidewalk chalk.
Some of the older girls are having problems getting along. Please be praying for them. I hate having to break up fights.
Spring is here!

Ashley
