Rachel Comes to Kensington

Studied Earthquakes in Geology lab today.

Mr. Alonzo from Kensington left me a voice mail. When I first got the call I thought, “Uh oh.. they’re going to kick us out.”

But it was great news! They want to partner more with us and do more events. I told them about the Christmas party we’re going to have on Saturday, December 18 from 12-2pm. Please be praying for a great turnout.

Rachel Greene, My friend from First Baptist Duluth, came to help out at Kensington. The kids took to her immediately.

Listen in on their conversation.

Hanezor had fun showing off his silly bands.

Thank You Notes

Spent time with Miles and His Dad. We ate at the Texas Roadhouse.

Miles is really interested in going to the International Luthiers Guitar Building school. He loves playing guitar and can really see himself working hands on with the instrument. The only catch is that the 3 month class costs $10,000. Today he weighed the pros and cons of attending the school with his dad.

James, Miles’ best friend is back in town from Knoxville, Tennessee for Thanksgiving.

Wrote some thank you cards. Do you want a card from your youngest missionary? Shoot me an email at ashleycummins@gmail.com with your home address and look forward to getting a homemade card.

Spent about an hour figuring out which classes I want to take.

I’ve taken 46 hours so far and only need 7 more classes to get my associated degree. I’m looking forward to transferring to Georgia State University in the Spring of 2012 and graduating with my Bachelors degree in Journalism by Fall 2014 if all goes according to plan.

Tova Rinah in Decatur

Hannah and I started with lunch at Pizza Cafe. I got a slice of Peperoni, Pineapple, Jalepeno and she got BBQ Chicken without chicken. Pizza is so good. I like to fold my pieces. How do you eat yours?

Then we drove down to Little Five points to look at the Bass Lofts which used to be an old 1920’s High school.

We meet David, a local shop owner in Little Five, who gave us a tour.

He had an accent so I asked, “Where are you from?” and he replied,” Nigeria.”

So I said, ” Oh! Bayoni!” Which means hello in Nigerian.

His mouth dropped and he got all excited, “Ohhh whaaat?!”

Learn some greetings in another language and really make foreigners feel at home.

Later, Hannah and I meet up with her cousin, Taylor, and her two friends River and Roane.

They are travelling cross country from Oregon and have been couch surfing all the way.

Around 9 we left to watch Tova, Hannah’s sister play an acoustic set at Java Monkey.

Please pray for the people who’s homes caught on fire.

Dinner with the Kendalls at Ruby Tuesday’s.

Learning how to play guitar

Hello!

Today I went to study History leading up to the Civil War. We read an article by Eric Foner that I’m about to critique. I made an A on my last one and hope to keep up the great work.

In Mass Media my group FINALLY got to present after waiting 3 days. We were the most cohesive group and I thought we did really well.

Home now to study and play some guitar. I’m learning Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds.

I’m a REAL journalist now!

History Class. Nobodies been reading and Professor McGrath can tell. She lets up off the hook though. I should read tonight. Revolutionary war, baby!

Group projects today in the libray with Tasha and Stacey. Our topic is Disney, the Media Conclomerate. I’m begining research on all their products, Cruises to toys.

Attended the TAG (Transfer Admission Guarntee) Recruitment fair. This will be my senior year at Georgia Perimeter.

The most EXCITING part of the day. We got our new equipment! Six brand new Canon Rebels with zoom lens and FLiP video cameras. I had so much fun walking around campus meeting and gathering quotes for the rails in the newspaper.

Worked with the kids at Kensington. It’s so been cool out lately, really comfortable to sit outside on the picnic table and do homework together.

I helped Armondo do double digit math problems. 34×6. If you can help fifth graders do this,  you should be a missionary.

Home now writing and editing articles. I really want this to be an impressive issue since we’re taking it to nationals! Woop Woop.

Rapping Ronnie

Ronnie is my new project. He is an 11 year old fifth grader who saw his brother get shot and killed.

Over the years he’s been one of the hardest kids to work with. He cusses a lot, gets in fights and is ready to drop out of school.

I’ve been praying for him a lot lately and I can really see the difference.

Today he asked politely to use my phone and we worked on his homework together.

Ronnie likes to rap so I decided to reward him for his good behavior by helping him record his songs. Some of them are really sad. He talks about being born a mistake and being raised by gangsters.

I’m hoping this exercise will help him and I get along better and have him take a look at his life so we can decide what next move will be.

Please be praying for Ronnie.

Jay comes to Kensington

We identified minerals today in Geology lab by using the streak, color and hardness test.

Met Jay Ramos, our new tutor. He showed up just in time.

It’s good for the guys to have a male role model around. They enjoyed tossing the football together.. He’s just what we’ve been praying for.

Studying History now, The Logic of Rebellion.

It’s Mile’s 22 tomorrow!

I love fried chicken. Don’t you? Especially bread crumb battered fried chicken. Perfect on Sundays.

It rained a lot today. Knocked the electricity out 3 times.

Wrote my newsletter…

Ashley’s Dispatch October 2010

Mama and I drove up I-85 to First Baptist Duluth.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a group of teen girls. Young missionaries.

I spoke for an hour, we sang an African song and played tug of war just like we do at Kensington.

The Texas Missionaries Come to Kensington

Jesse and I picked up Babu and went out to eat Mexican with him. I think this is the first time we’ve ever eaten with just him.

Picked up the ladies and we headed to Kensington.

We ran relay laps, played tug of war and jumprope before doing homework.

It was such a big help to have more volunteers help with homework.

Then Nana told a Bible story.

Then we passed out numbers and had a cupcake prize for the ones that were called.

For people who didn’t win cupcakes we had a huge candy toss.

Everyone swarms around candy.

I got some sad news that Mama Johnson and her family is leaving. She hasn’t told the younger kids yet but she told Selena the oldest middle schooler. Selena was NOT happy to hear she had to leave all her friends in the middle of the year and move to Tennessee. Please be praying for this family.

Good day overall.

Would you like to play?

Hello,

Ate at El T. with the family today.

The kids got off the bus today. That’s always my favorite part seeing them when they first get off.

We played baseball, ran relay race and cracked nuts while reading Bible verses.

Chasity and Charity, second graders at Kensington.

Kahil’s mom, Mrs. Natalie, was so happy that we were there to help her kids. She went out and bought little water bottles so all the kids could have a drink.

That’s what it’s all about.

Giving a cup of water in Jesus’ name.

Helped the kids with their homework.

Meet with Mr.David and Zoe at The Collegian Newspaper. We’re giving our newspaper a new style and design.

Home now. Studying for my Mass Communications speech tomorrow about the media.

Tug of War

In History we had a class discussion over the article “Slavery and Freedom: An American Paradox” by Eudmond Morgan.

Would you believe that slavery and freedom are intertwined?

Mass Communication was next. We got a worksheet tool to help us take notes over media.

Picked Mama up at Crazy Ron’s she biked there. It smelled so good out but it was closed. :(

Ate at Matthew’s Cafeteria. It’s been featured on Dine-ins, Diners and Dives. Yum.

Had fun playing tug of war and racing the kids at Kensington.

Mama did Bible Verses with the kids from her giant Bible. However many verses they read each one got some Pecans.

You’re the Best Teacher in the Whole World!

Miles and I enjoyed Red Lobster today before I left for Kensington.

I’ve been having a really good time out there with the kids.

We have a lot of new kids and they’ve been fun to get to know.

Today Kamaya told me, “Teacher, you’re the best teacher in the whole world!”

That made me happy.

We’re doing a good job out here.

Going to start my newsletter and work on my homework.

Hot ‘n Tasty Hot Dog Buns

Woke up early this morning to finish that. Worked right away. Thank you, Lord.

Welcome Back Week started today. I passed out over 175 newspapers to students with Nedra, our new work study girl.

The kids and I enjoyed hot dog buns that were sweaty from the sun. They were actually sweet like Hawaiian rolls.

Called out spelling words to the kids.

Helped Gracely read.

Hamburgers with Miles.

First Day of the Third Year

Hello!

Today was my first day back to school.

I did an hour power paper pass out today before class. I meet over 200 students at my Clarkston campus. Everyone seemed very happy to get the new issue.

I have a Geology class from 1-3:45. Whew! That’s a lot of rock talk. I really enjoy the professor though.

Labs always seem fun to me. You get to work in a group, talk and drop acid… on rocks.

Designed some templates for the new issue.

Mo’s riding her bike around with one of the older girls, Lora, from Kensington.

Thrusdays with Daddy

Daddy, Mo and I met Milo at El Torero’s for lunch. Yumbo!

I hung out with Miles. Kevin came over and we watched Paranormal Activity.

Dad picked me up and we drove to Azalea to work with the kids there. I helped organize the school supplies and then read with Barbara and Nishi. So cute!

Now home to work on an article for the newspaper.

Can you believe I go back to college Monday? Dang! I’m looking forward to it.

I created a Kensington Station “About Us” paper to give to the owners and management. See it here. It maybe useful at your mission.

Wildfires and Memory Verses

Daddy and I went to eat Spiced Right together today. Then we looked at the collection of shirts at Goodwill. We found some really good ones. Afterwards we went to the Antique mall. I love just roaming around looking for treasures. Dad found a lot of good stuff, he even got an old fashioned oil lamp. I found a book of 101 stories for the kids to read at Kensington.

Picked up Mo and we drove towards Kensington. We hit 78 and BAM! Miles of traffic. I had to drive backwards on the shoulder and off road to get onto the ramp to get out of that situation. Turns out the brush on the side of the road had caught fire.

The kids and I memorized Deuteronomy 7:9 today. Take a look at the video here.

Ashley
